Children in flannel walls
We hide under blankets
Silent in hunger; as it calls
We clutch feather pillows, anguish flushes within
Knowingly our idols are committing a sin
Our cheeks roused with fever of anger and fear
We hold blankets over, close by, and near
The cheeks are flushed. The sadness abounds
God looks, ears twitch from the sounds
These are the flannels no man shall unclean
To make children bleed, their hearts are unseen
The children we hunger for smiles shining bright
Yet we see sorrow when the dusk falls to night
Hide me no more give me no pain
Release me to freedom and take off this chain
I rise up to God’s glory to shed of my fear
That I will know wonder, peace almost near
That God, yes He loves me a child of His reign
Blankets protect me from feeling my pain
Can’t take away what’s happened, can’t make men lame
But I won’t keep on fighting with weapons of blame
He loves me so dearly my God, yes He does
Pain in my heart severe, mine it was
I act out with venom and bile and tears
Hurting myself yes the children, our fears
‘Cause righting the wrongs of the men we adore
Is easier than go letting and closing the door
Yes God still He loves us, we’re children of God
Pity, anguish, and hunger, feeling we’re odd
Feeling there’s nowhere to go for reprieve
While man holds our hand for his self to relieve
Don’t give up hope child there are those who survive
Someday as I have, given thanks you’re alive
You will live in wonderment as I too have done
And I found my God loving me just one on one
Giggles are saved not for those who hate
We laugh as adults having refused awful fate
Look into the mirror at your reflect you muse
You see what comes back; your eyes won’t refuse
See sweetness and leave yes the perils of life
So growth can abound abandoning strife
Run with your might as angels carry you away
Far-reaching from peril close to God you will stay
Take not the drugs; don’t partake of the wine
For that feeling it gives you will come in time
And be tired with freedom from the pain you ignore
Your angels carried you; continue forever more
So children keep laughing and loving so pure
For you are our futures for flannels demure
Your innocence awaits us to teach us our ways
That we are to nurture, you shining with rays
That the sun will come light you, God yes He calls
As the dusk to night falls
Children in flannel walls
Peace be with all the abused children tonight
Amen
